1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Chico asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Waste Management's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Please indicate items to be picked up when booking appointment.
   • Items must be curbside by 5 a.m.
   • Bulky pickup service is combination of loose items up to four (4) cubic yards, plus three (3) additional individual large Items.
   • You have to book it first — they need to know at least 48 hours ahead of your usual collection day.
   • On what they won't take at the curb: tires, construction debris, medical waste and household hazardous waste are not acceptable.

4. Can you take a mattress to the landfill near Chico?

   You can, but check the price first — it is usually more than a pickup costs. Neal Road Recycling and Waste Facility in Paradise does take mattresses — mattresses, Box Springs (Residential) Item $0.00. Either way you need a truck and the drive out to Paradise, and a pickup from us is $89 and comes to you.
