1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations". There are 6 of those inside Fresno, listed below.

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Fresno asks for if you use city pickup

   These are City of Fresno's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Place items where weekly residential garbage containers are serviced, except those having alley services.
   • Items shall be out by 6:00 A.M. on the scheduled day of pickup.
   • Where to put it: your bulky item must be placed 1-1.5 feet from the curb in front of your residence, and away from sewer vents, water meters, mailboxes, and fire hydrants to avoid potential property damage.
   • The One-Time Bulky Item Pickup program provides customers the opportunity to dispose of single bulky items that are too large to fit in the City-issued Green, Gray, or Blue solid waste carts.
   • All other debris piles will be considered illegal dumping and cited accordingly.
   • Customers will receive a call from Solid Waste within seven (7) business days to confirm a pickup date.
   • Mattress are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.
