Mattress removal in Grover Beach, CA

Booking takes about a minute. Pick your items and a pickup day, put the mattress out that morning, and we'll load it and take it away. Most of our Grover Beach pickups are curbside, so there's nothing to wrap and no trip to make.

From there it goes to our local recycling facility, where our team takes it apart by hand. The foam gets baled for carpet padding, the steel springs go to scrap processors, and box-spring wood gets chipped. Here's the whole process if you want to see it.

Grover Beach and California mattress disposal rules

Booking with us? You can skip this part. Everything below is for handling it yourself — Grover Beach's rules, the fees and the drop-off options. If we're doing the pickup, the regulations and the recycling are ours to deal with: you leave it at the curb and we take it from there.

  1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

  2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

  3. What Grover Beach asks for if you use city pickup

These are South County Sanitary's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

    • Bulky items must be neatly bundled or bagged.
    • On your scheduled collection day please set your carts out by 6:00am, placing them against the curb, three feet away from each other and three feet away from vehicles and other property.
    • Bulky item pickups, complimentary or otherwise, must be called in or scheduled online at least 5 days prior to your regular pick-up day.
    • Their accepted list is examples of bulky items include appliances, furniture, kitchen items, sporting equipment, and office supplies. — it doesn't name mattresses either way, so ask before you put one out.
    • Single-family residents who live in clean-up week jurisdictions may place up to six additional 32-gallon size bags of trash alongside their normal carts at no additional charge during these weeks, on the morning of their normal pickup day only.
    • On what they won't take at the curb: no hazardous materials , concrete in trash bags, or items longer than 4' (rugs, tables, pipes, lumber, etc.).

The city's own pages disagree on this one. One says bulky item pickups, complimentary or otherwise, must be called in or scheduled online at least 5 days prior to your regular pick-up day; another city page says ALL bulky item pickups during Clean-up Weeks must be called in or scheduled online at least 3 days prior to your regular pickup day by the service account holder.
