1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Costa Mesa asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD)'s requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Please note that CR&R will not collect any items that are not specified at the time the pickup is scheduled.
   • CMSD solid waste customers can have large items collected curbside in front of their own property for free through the Large Item Collection Program.
   • Where to put it: as long as items do not exceed 8 x 4 ft. or 150 lbs.
   • Each customer household is eligible for three (3) complimentary pickups per year with ten (10) items collected during each pickup.
   • Items that are dumped in the public right-of-way should be reported to the City of Costa Mesa at (714) 754-5000.
   • Pickups do not occur immediately; rather, they may be scheduled one or more weeks from your initial request, depending on availability.
   • Furniture (chairs, sofas, mattresses, rugs, etc.) are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.
   • On what they won't take at the curb: items larger than 8 x 4 ft. or heavier than 150 lbs. (i.e. items that cannot be lifted by 2 people).

4. Can you take a mattress to the landfill near Costa Mesa?

   You can, but check the price first — it is usually more than a pickup costs. Olinda Alpha Landfill in Brea does take mattresses — mattress-only loads (no mixed waste) are accepted for free at our Prima Deshecha and Olinda Alpha landfills for residential customers. Mattresses can be brought to either site and MUST NOT be covered or mixed with trash or other waste. Either way you need a truck and the drive out to Brea, and a pickup from us is $89 and comes to you.
