1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Pasadena asks for if you use city pickup

   These are City of Pasadena's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Items should be no bigger or heavier than what two (2) people can safely lift.
   • Bulky items are picked up from the parkway in the front of the house. This is the area between the sidewalk and the street.
   • Where to put it: it is the resident’s responsibility to place the items on the parkway. City staff cannot go onto private property to move bulky items to the parkway.
   • Residents can put out as many items that would fill a 3 cubic yard bin, which measures 4 feet wide, 5 feet long and 4 feet high.
   • Bulky items should be placed out on the parkway no more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled pickup day, otherwise a citation may be issued by Code Enforcement.
   • Residents are advised to schedule the pick up at least two weeks in advance prior to their regular trash pickup day.
   • On what they won't take at the curb: e-waste such as TV, DVD player, cellphone, gaming console, computers and monitors.
