1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. 2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Torrance asks for if you use city pickup

   These are City of Torrance's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Small items must be tied in or placed in bags.
   • Torrance Municipal Code states that materials cannot be placed for collection earlier than 12 hours before the scheduled pickup.
   • Where to put it: place items where recycling is picked up, at least five feet away from your trash and recycling containers.
   • The City will collect up to 20 items per pick up.
   • Report illegal dumping at (855) 354-5623 or by using the myTorranceCA app.
   • Cancellations must be made at least one day in advance of your scheduled pickup.
   • Mattresses are accepted in the City's Large Item Pick Up service and recycled through the Mattress Recycling Council. are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.
