1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations". There's one of those inside Mendocino, listed below.

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Mendocino asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Redwood Waste Solutions' requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • A charge for freon removal may be applied for refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners.
   • Residential customers in the areas of the City of Fort Bragg, Unincorporated Fort Bragg, Albion, Mendocino, Comptche, unincorporated Ukiah, Redwood Valley, Potter Valley, and Hopland are entitled to have two (2) bulky Items collected per year at no charge.
   • For scheduling inquiries in areas where Bulky Item Collection is not available, please call 707-234-6400.
   • Their accepted list is bulky items typically include a piece of furniture or an appliance. — it doesn't name mattresses either way, so ask before you put one out.
