1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. 2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Modesto asks for if you use city pickup

   These are City of Modesto's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • All items must be placed in the street against the curb.
   • Please do not place items out for collection until 6:00 PM the evening before your scheduled appointment.
   • Where to put it: do not block sidewalks, driveways, fire hydrants, storm drains, garbage cans, etc.
   • Small items must be placed in the garbage container.
