1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Paso Robles asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Paso Robles Waste & Recycle's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Individual items may not exceed 120 lbs. (couches, appliances, etc.); Individual items must be safely moved by two workers by hand.
   • Place your bulky items on the curb no later than 6am on your reserved collection day.
   • Where to put it: be sure it doesn't block your normal containers.
   • Paso Robles Waste & Recycle says: “We will take up to 7 items on your scheduled clean-up day”.
   • Customer must call in beforehand and schedule the pickup.
   • Bulky items include appliances, furniture, mattresses, any over-sized item that will not fit into your container. are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.
   • Bags, boxes, or bundles may not exceed 60 lbs.
   • On what they won't take at the curb: no toxic or hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, medical waste, oil, gasoline, etc.).

4. Can you take a mattress to the landfill near Paso Robles?

   You can, but check the price first — it is usually more than a pickup costs. Cold Canyon Landfill in San Luis Obispo does take mattresses — FREE. Either way you need a truck and the drive out to San Luis Obispo, and a pickup from us is $89 and comes to you.
