1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. 2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Sacramento asks for if you use city pickup

   These are City of Sacramento's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Loose items should be placed in disposable containers like cardboard boxes.
   • Material must be placed out for collection by 6:00 AM on the scheduled appointment day.
   • Where to put it: place pile six feet away from parked vehicles.
   • Pile must not exceed 4' X 4' X 9' (four feet by four feet by nine feet) in length.
   • Materials should be placed on the street no earlier than 24 hours before the scheduled appointment.
   • Furniture Mattresses Carpet Toys are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.

4. Can you take a mattress to the landfill near Sacramento?

   Kiefer Landfill in Sloughhouse is the nearest landfill, but its page doesn't say whether it takes mattresses. Call before you load up. Either way you need a truck and the drive out to Sloughhouse, and a pickup from us is $89 and comes to you.
