1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Fremont asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Republic Services' requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • All household trash must be bagged, bundled or boxed (except large bulky items).
   • Place items at your curbside not more than 24 hours in advance but by 5:45 a.m. on your scheduled bulky collection day.
   • Where to put it: group items in a 6x6x6 area in the street, next to the curb.
   • You get 2 appliances or large items (not to exceed 150 lbs) and If items set-out exceeds 6x6x6, customer will be responsible for an additional bulky item collection fee. per address.
   • Customers are required to contact Republic Services at least 2 weeks in advance of the requested collection date by calling 510-657-3500 to schedule an appointment.
   • Mattresses & Box Springs are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.
   • If items set-out exceeds 6x6x6, customer will be responsible for an additional bulky item collection fee.
   • On what they won't take at the curb: hazardous waste is NOT accepted during scheduled clean-ups or during regular collection service.
