1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Mountain View asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Recology's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Items must be set out no later than 7 a.m. on scheduled collection day.
   • Where to put it: place at curbside on top of the planter strip or in the street next to the curb (do not block the roadway).
   • PLUS up to three bulky goods, such as appliances and furniture.
   • On what they won't take at the curb: household hazardous waste (such as paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents, fertilizers), creosote timbers, vehicle parts or batteries, fluorescent tube lights.
