1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Santa Clara asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Mission Trail's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Place the bags in the street curbside when you are ready to start filling them.
   • Everything must be ready prior to 6am.
   • Next to the bags, you may put out up to three bulky items.
   • Mission Trail says: “Please contact us as far in advance as possible”.
   • Common bulky items include mattresses, sofas, dishwashers, water heaters and similar furnishings and appliances. are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.
   • Prior to your scheduled cleanup day, two 4’x4’x4’ bags will be delivered.
   • On what they won't take at the curb: items labeled toxic, poisonous, hazardous, or flammable cannot be collected through the On-Call Cleanup Program.
