1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. 2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Santa Cruz asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Santa Cruz's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • This is an application for service - do not place items on the street until your pickup has been scheduled.
   • Extra bags of trash, bulky items or appliances will not be collected curbside unless previously scheduled.
   • If the Utility Bill is in your name, you are eligible to have up to four bulky items collected at one time or 1 item up to 4 times a year.
   • Disposing of these items responsibly, reduces the blight caused by illegally dumping a mattress or box spring on a street corner or open space.
   • Each account holder (single family residential service)remains eligible for 4 extra service pickups at no charge.

   • Single Family residential customers can schedule curbside collection of up to four Bulky items or appliances or bags of trash (or any combination thereof up to 4) on an annual basis free of charge.

4. Can you take a mattress to the landfill near Santa Cruz?

   Buena Vista Landfill in Watsonville is the nearest landfill, but its page doesn't say whether it takes mattresses — its gate rate is FREE. Call before you load up. Customers must finish unloading within 15 minutes after closing. Either way you need a truck and the drive out to Watsonville, and a pickup from us is $89 and comes to you.
