1. California already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   California is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $18.00 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "drop off your old mattress at no additional cost at participating locations".

2. Buying a new mattress? The shop has to take the old one

   If you're having a new mattress delivered, California law requires your retailer to offer to take back your old mattress at no additional cost. The retailer has up to 30 days to take back your old mattress, and they can turn it down if it's a health or safety risk. Worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Tahoe City asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Items of unusual shape and size, such as large ladders and inflatables, may need to be broken down prior to collection.
   • Items should be placed curbside on the scheduled collection day by 6 a.m.
   • A maximum of one item per pickup, weighing up to 200 pounds, can be scheduled for collection.
   • Must have active service with an account in good standing.
   • Accepted items include but are not limited to household tables, chairs, couches, BBQs, refrigerators/freezers, mattresses and rugs are on the accepted list, so the mattress itself is not the problem — the booking is.
