Mattress removal in Somerville, MA

Booking takes about a minute. Pick your items and a pickup day, put the mattress out that morning, and we'll load it and take it away. Most of our Somerville pickups are curbside, so there's nothing to wrap and no trip to make.

From there it goes to our local recycling facility, where our team takes it apart by hand. The foam gets baled for carpet padding, the steel springs go to scrap processors, and box-spring wood gets chipped. Here's the whole process if you want to see it.

Somerville and Massachusetts mattress disposal rules

Booking with us? You can skip this part. Everything below is for handling it yourself — Somerville's rules, the fees and the drop-off options. If we're doing the pickup, the regulations and the recycling are ours to deal with: you leave it at the curb and we take it from there.

  1. What Somerville asks for if you use city pickup

These are City of Somerville's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

    • Place a disposal sticker on each item to be discarded.
    • Mattresses and box springs may be placed outside for pickup starting at 4 p.m. on the day before the pickup day.
    • Where to put it: when placing on the curb, please leave a clear path at least 36 inches (three feet) wide.
    • Mattress and box spring recycling is limited to 2 items per property each week.
    • Recyclable mattresses placed out with trash and not scheduled for pickup will be left on the curb and, after a grace period at the start of the program, may be subject to fines.
    • Residents must contact 311 Constituent Services in advance (no later than 3:30 p.m. the day before mattress collection) to schedule a mattress and/or box spring pickup.
    • Their accepted list is most mattress types can be recycled including foam, spring, mixed material, or latex mattresses and all box springs. — it doesn't name mattresses either way, so ask before you put one out.
    • Only residential households in buildings with 6 or fewer units that receive regular City trash collection are eligible to have the City recycle their mattress or box spring.
    • Some things they won't take at the curb at all, including futons, mattress pads, or toppers.
