Oregon is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $22.50 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "mattresses and box springs in any condition, no matter when purchased, can be dropped off for free at a participating collection site or event". When your new mattress is delivered, ask your retailer if they will take back your old one — this may be provided at little to no charge depending on the retailer's policies. Unlike California, Oregon doesn't require them to, so it's worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.
