1. Oregon already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   Oregon is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $22.50 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "mattresses and box springs in any condition, no matter when purchased, can be dropped off for free at a participating collection site or event". 2. Buying a new mattress? Ask the shop to take the old one

   When your new mattress is delivered, ask your retailer if they will take back your old one — this may be provided at little to no charge depending on the retailer's policies. Unlike California, Oregon doesn't require them to, so it's worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Portland asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Your garbage and recycling company's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • Don't set items out more than 24 hours before pickup.
   • Set items at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day.
   • Prices apply to single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes in Portland.
   • Early setouts can soak up rain and become too heavy to lift, creating safety risks for garbage collectors and attracting illegal dumping and pests.
