1. Rhode Island already paid for your mattress to be recycled

   Rhode Island is one of four states with a mattress recycling law, and you paid into it when you bought the mattress — $20.50 per unit on every mattress and box spring sold in the state. That's what makes drop-off free: in the program's own words, "any amount of units can be dropped off at a participating recycling facility". One catch: registration is required, so you can't just turn up. There's one of those inside Providence, listed below.

2. Buying a new mattress? Ask the shop to take the old one

   When your new mattress is delivered, ask your retailer if they will take back your old one — this may be provided at little to no charge depending on the retailer's policies. Unlike California, Rhode Island doesn't require them to, so it's worth asking before you pay anyone — including us — to haul it away.

3. What Providence asks for if you use city pickup

   These are Waste Management's requirements, not ours — they apply if you're putting the mattress out for the city rather than booking a pickup with us.

   • As a reminder, Waste Management requires that all mattresses be put in plastic bags to be recovered.
   • Items should be placed at the curb no earlier than 4 PM the evening before collection and no later than 4 AM the day of collection.
   • Where to put it: place your items at the curb in front of your residence beside your Big Green Can and gray trash container.
   • You may schedule up to 3 items per unit for service.
   • Uncollected items remaining on the curb pose a public nuisance. They will be tagged for removal; failure to remove the items will result in a fine against the owner of the property.
   • Residents can also call Waste Management at 1(800)972-4545 more than 48 hours ahead of your trash day to make an appointment for a curbside pick up of bagged mattresses for a fee.
